Catherine Freeman Visits Vanuatu with the Oceania Foundation
Feb 27, 09:05 AM

Catherine Freeman on behalf of the Catherine Freeman Foundation was invited by the IOC’s, Oceania Foundation, to participate in an educational excursion to Vanuatu from 12 Feb – 15 Feb. This was an extremely well received and momentous occasion for the Vanuatu people as the last Olympic Gold Medallist to visit their country was Australia’s Herb Elliot in 1956.

The Oceania Foundation in conjunction with Monash University has implemented a range of skill-based and health related programs throughout the Oceania region. Each of them designed to promote health and increased participation in Olympic Sports.

The Oceania Foundation has proposed working together with the Catherine Freeman Foundation with indigenous communities throughout Australia. Through providing educational programs aimed at up-skilling sport coaches in remote areas the ultimate goal is to provide a pathway for ‘sporty’ children in remote communities with access to the right expertise to help them reach their goals.

In Vanuatu, Freeman had the opportunity to share her vision for the Catherine Freeman Foundation with Vanuatu’s Head of State, Prime Minister, Sports Minister and the Australian representative at the Australian High Commission. Team Freeman also spent time at the clinics for coaches and travelled to a number of schools where they meet and chatted to young people.

The visit was extremely productive and as a result the Catherine Freeman Foundation is investigating opportunities to work with the Oceania Foundation, including the possibility of applying for available grants for tertiary education at Monash University for Indigenous students.
