Creating pathways to a brighter future.

Catherine and Carolyn Schuwalow made a flying visit to Palm Island this week to touch base with the community and to also to hold discuss with different groups within the community about their ideas and suggestions for joint projects in 2008.
It was unanimously agreed that the 2007 non-truancy bike project was a huge success in assisting to address the truancy issues. The added bonus was that it had a real effect on positive attitude and behaviour, according to Lil Myrtl, the headmistress of St Michaels School. The idea of a rewards based program has proven to be a real incentive for the children of Palm Island and will be carried out again, with a total of 20 bikes to be awarded in 2008. Catherine spent a day visiting all schools to spend time with the youngsters of Palm Island: from the day care centre, where she read books to the children, to both Bwgcolman school junior and senior campuses, St Michaels school and the TAFE college.
Discussions with the newly elected council, headed up by the new Mayor of Palm Island, Alf Lacey, reinforced the importance of the work that the Catherine Freeman Foundation is doing on the Island and guaranteed council support of joint projects moving forward. Currently in discussion is the location of the new Indigenous Learning Centre which the CFF is helping to fund and populate with books, kindly supported by Carnival Australia. In particular the council was most impressed with the pro-active hands on approach of the CFF in actually spending time in the community. Through talking to all members of the community and returning on a regular basis the Foundation is able to reinforce and strengthen the relationships. Such is the belief in Catherine Freeman and the work of the CFF on the Island that Catherine was formally asked to become Palm Island’s first official ambassador.
The Foundation team is due to return to Palm Island mid May to formally launch the non-truancy bike project 2008.
