Creating pathways to a brighter future.
I would like to congratulate the men of the Melbourne Fire Brigade running club for their fantastic efforts in raising awareness of the sacrifices of those who came before us. This years ANZAC Run has traveled from Canberra to Melbourne and is a great tribute to the ANZAC spirit and gives recognition and thanks to the RSL and all those who fought to defend the freedom of the greatest country in the world; Australia.
I am humbled that I have been given the opportunity to support next years Gallipoli to London Great ANZAC Run in partnership with the newly formed Catherine Freeman Foundation to ensure that this legacy is not lost or forgotten.
This year the ANZAC Run has special meaning to the men and women that have covered the journey. One of their own, Ross Leeder, a pivotal organizer of this event, passed away in December 2006 and like our fallen soldiers, his comrades feel great loss. We wish to dedicate 2007 and 2008 to the memory of Ross.
The message that the Great ANZAC Run represents aligns with my vision for the Catherine Freeman Foundation, and is one of self-sacrifice, friendship, working together in partnership, integrity and a commitment to what it means to be Australian. It’s about looking out for your mates and community and helping those less fortunate – defending and protecting our future.
I am really thrilled that in 2008, the Great ANZAC Run will not only be celebrating the bravery of our forefathers, but will also be supporting Australian communities with limited opportunity by undertaking a momentous challenge in support of the Catherine Freeman Foundation. The challenge is to run from Gallipoli to London via the battle fields of France and Belgium and I know that Australia will demonstrate the patriotism that we are world famous for and throw their support behind this amazing undertaking.
