Thru the lens: Palm Island Youth Photography Project

As part of NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) celebrations on July 8, 2009, Catherine Freeman opened the photographic exhibition entitled, “Thu the lens: Palm Island Youth Photography Project” at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). In an exhibition supported by the QLD Government, Bwgcolman Future Incorporated and The Catherine Freeman Foundation, the 18 photographs taken by Palm Island youngsters will be displayed in the main foyer for general public viewing until August 9, 2009.

The Palm Island photographers are Caleb Blackley 12, Zara Pitman Blackley 7, Robert Palmer 13, Lekeisha Ryan 11, Alfie Ryan 8 and Shannon Castors 12.

QLD Premier and Minister for the Arts Anna Bligh said Thru The Lens was a beautiful exhibition that captured daily life on Palm Island through the eyes of the young photographers aged six to 16 years who lived in the community.

The photographs were taken in 2007 as part of a youth workshop facilitated by Bwgcolman Future Inc, a non-profit organisation based on Palm Island that works with the community to achieve improved social, health, environmental and economic outcomes.

The Catherine Freeman Foundation wishes to acknowledge and thank Rob Blackely, Svea Pitman, Tony Ellwood, Tony Albert, Bruce McLean, Auntie Joan Collins and Peta O’Neil.
